When I first played this (I made sure to stay away from FAQS and Megaman X8 discussion threads before playing the game.), I wasn't exactly shocked that Lumine was a maverick. I was, how-ever suprised that he managed to nab the final boss spot from Sigma. That takes some balls.
If he has balls. I mean he is a reploid, who knows what their anatomy is like down there?
Stop looking at me like that. You all questioned his gender too.
Capcom likes it's bishōnen characters doesn't it? First Zero (hey, he actually boobs!), now this guy.
Let's not forget the mess Capcom made with the other series bosses, Cubit Foxtar,(yes he's a guy. No really. I know Cubit looks and sounds female, I know it has breasts. It's still male. No. I'm not joking. Don't you hate Capcom now too?), Serenade, and of course the ultimate fashion icon, Elipzo. (He's a total bad ass. He wears pink AND he's the main villian in Zero 2. Awesome.) At this point I wouldn't be fazed to hear Roll is actually Rock's brother and there is no gender choice in the ZX series.

Maverick used to be just faulty programming, but it eventually became a concious choice, then capcom got lazy and just said that all mavericks have the virus.

... allows them to commit horrible acts of murder without feeling remorse or guilt. Keep in mind, Mavericks existed before the Sigma/Maverick Virus showed up, which is how the Maverick Hunters were formed.
But now, everybody just assumes that to be Maverick, you need to have the Virus, rather than being made with a flaw or making a conscious choice to go Maverick.
it's one of the things about the series that bugs the Hell out of me.

How can anybody believe that a Reploid going Maverick cannot be a conscious choice? I mean, they're sentient beings, with thoughts, opinions and personalities all their own. Just like Humans, they could one day choose to stand up against the status quo and resist, becoming Maverick.
But also, some of them could have been made with faulty equipment, possessing a flaw that could also turn them Maverick, much like how some people are born with damaged brain areas...

Depends on the time, game, series and events that take place. Pre-X1, Zero was Maverick. In the bad ending of X5, Zero is a Maverick. In the Zero series, Zero is a Maverick (as is the whole of the Resistance).

I think what Lumine meant is that unlike X, who cannot consciously choose to kill humans and non-Mavericks (which is why he leaps to such conclusions - think about it : I want to kill you! But you're not..... a maverick..... oh wait, you are *Mega-Buster to the face*). They have the ability to actually choose evil from good, as opposed to having it pre-programmed. I guess it's free will v2.0, I guess.
